Saudi Arabia's calendar, clock, and seasons — explained for American readers

What Is the Year 1447 in Islam — and Which Gregorian Dates Does It Cover?

The short answer

1447 AH is a Hijri year that opened around the last week of June 2025 and closed in the first half of June 2026 — so it straddles two Gregorian years rather than matching either. As of late 2026 the running Hijri year is 1448 AH. Exact start and end days come from the official Umm al-Qura calendar, not from arithmetic alone.

In one line: 1447 AH ≈ mid-2025 to mid-2026.

Why one Hijri year covers two Gregorian years

A Hijri year is 354 or 355 days — twelve lunar months of 29 or 30 days — about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year (U.S. Naval Observatory). Three consequences follow:

  • Every Hijri year begins and ends mid-Gregorian-year, so it always spans two of them.
  • Each Hijri year starts roughly 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar than the one before.
  • Over about 33 years, Hijri dates make a full circuit of the seasons — Ramadan and Hajj included.

Summary: asking "which Gregorian year is 1447?" has two answers, and both are right.

Roughly where 1447's months fell

These windows are approximate because each month begins on a crescent sighting or an official announcement, which can shift a boundary by a day:

  • Muharram 1447 — late June into July 2025, opening the year.
  • Rabi al-Awwal — late August into September 2025.
  • Rajab — roughly late December 2025 into January 2026, the first of three months leading into Ramadan.
  • Ramadan 1447 — approximately mid-February to mid-March 2026.
  • Shawwal — opening with Eid al-Fitr, around mid-March 2026.
  • Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 — roughly mid-May to mid-June 2026, the Hajj month, closing the year.

Month names, their Arabic forms, and their 29/30-day lengths are listed in the 12 months of the Hijri year in Arabic.

Summary: 1447 put Ramadan in late winter and Hajj in late spring — both earlier than the year before.

How 1447 compares to its neighbors

  • 1446 AH ran roughly from July 2024 to June 2025, covered in what is the year 1446 in Islam.
  • 1447 AH followed immediately, about 11 days earlier in the Gregorian year.
  • 1448 AH began around mid-June 2026 and is the current year through the second half of 2026 — check it yourself using the method in what Hijri year is it now.

Summary: each successive year slides earlier; the pattern, not the arithmetic, is what to remember.

Checking a specific 1447 date

If you need a precise conversion — for a document, a certificate, or a travel record — do not estimate:

  • Use the official Saudi reference. The Umm al-Qura calendar is the authority for Saudi civil and administrative dates.
  • Expect converters to disagree by a day. Calculated calendars and sighting-based ones can differ at month boundaries; the reasons are in converting Hijri dates to Gregorian.
  • Treat pilgrimage dates as announced, not computed. Dhu al-Hijjah dates and the associated permits and seasons are published through the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and its booking platform.

Summary: approximate windows are fine for planning conversation; official sources are the only basis for a date that has to be exact.

Why the year number keeps confusing people

Subtracting 1447 from 2026 does not give the Hijri year, and adding 622 to 1447 does not give the Gregorian one. The two calendars run at different rates, so the gap between the numbers shrinks continuously — about one year of gap lost every 33 years. The underlying reason is set out in how the Hijri calendar works and in the USNO's Introduction to Calendars.

Summary: 1447 AH is best remembered as the lunar year bridging 2025 and 2026, with Ramadan in February–March 2026 and Hajj in late spring.
